The Devil is sometimes both pallid and black in the same document. His paleness is the product of an ancient tradition. Hecate herself was pale, for one naturally associates pallor as well as blackness with the lightless underworld and the chalky countenance of death. St. Augustine refers to the demons as pale with envy of God. Pallidity was a characteristic often attributed to heretics. As early as the 4th century the Priscillianists were detected by their color, and from the 11th century heretics were commonly supposed to be pale, one explanation being that they had lost their color through excessive fasting and abstention from meat.****
Satan and his demons sometimes appeared armed with spears in order to torment the souls of the damned. The medieval Devil was sometimes furnished with a hammer or thunderbolt, attesting the influence of the Northern gods. The 3-faced Devil of Dante seems without extensive precedent in medieval witch literature; the literary and mythological precedent is the 3 faces of Hecate, the chthonic counterpart of Diana. Stories of incubi, succubi, and possession were legion. Demons cannot stand the light of day, according to some writers, and hence must be called up either at night or underground, a belief that reinforced the idea that heretics met secretly after dark or in caves. In such an atmosphere, where demons were efficacious and ubiquitous, witchcraft acquired new vigor.
